In 2015, Engineers IRL was conceived by Michelle Patrick-Krueger as a way to introduce low-resource students to what a career in engineering means.
The initial event was held in February of 2016 and received an overwhelming positive response. Through the support of Clear Creek ISD and the Clear Lake High School PTSA, an annual event was created that quickly grew as awareness increased. In 2024, it was moved across the street to UH-Clear Lake.
